ALSC president Kirby McCurtis told I Love Libraries (http://www.ilovelibraries.org/article/if-your-kids-need-help-coping-pandemic-look-libraries): “Children and their caregivers can turn to books for solace and support during times of crisis. Through their stories and illustrations, books can help children understand, navigate, and survive these experiences,” McCurtis explains. “A child who might not be ready to talk about a loss or struggle may find an acknowledgment of their sadness when reading about a similar experience in a book.”

Children in Trauma Bibliography ~
Governors State University Library

Kim Becnel and Robin Moeller at Appalachian State University have developed a bibliography of picture books about dealing with anxiety. This list was developed with the support of the Carnegie Whitney Grant and features 267 reviews of books published between 2010 and 2022. In addition to the individual reviews, a social-emotional learning framework is used to help librarians, educators, parents, guardians, and counselors better identify books that might work best for the children with whom they work. Libraries and other youth-centered organizations are welcome to link directly to the bibliography as a resource for patrons and clients.
